Oh yes - I was being driven around in a Merc Convertible by a lovely gent named Burke. After a slap up breakfast to start off the celebrations for Liesl's birthday we parted company to go on our vocational visits.
After finding out that we both had Heggarty Irish lineage, Burke and I found ourselves at the Schnieder Art Museum, where Mike Crane the director gave us a great tour and conversation. Unfortunately the museum was between exhibits with the upcoming "State of Jefferson" looking like a real doozy. This fictional state dreamed up by protesting Oregonian and Californians in the 40's is a real gem. I suggest everyone to look it up.
I was able to share with Mike some of the great works by our Bajan artists, and it was a real coincidence - he actually started his photographic art career in Jamaica where he was a member of the Peace Corp. He knew and had worked with a photographer Albert Chong of whom I had also worked with in Barbados!
Then we were off to Ashland Rotary Club where we heard about the Craterian Ginger Rogers Theatre, Melissa found a banner from her club in situ and had a bang up lunch. Olivier and I went to a few galleries, where I again did my Bajan Art Diplomat thang, were hailed on – yes hail! – and then went to visit the Peace Wall. This was a community run project, where people put up peace banners on some fences near the train station. They were vandalized, but not before someone had photo-documented them. To continue the theme the community decided to print the photos on tile and create a monument to the peace fence. Great idea guys, could Bajans be so community minded I wonder and hope?
Ken our fantastic Ashland host took us to dinner at the Winchester – YUM, and we continued to sing happy birthday to Liesl and steal roses until we were thrown out (not really). We practically ran to the Shakespearean Theatre to watch Pride and Prejudice on stage. A resounding night was had by all!
