What's This About??? I'm Nerys Rudder and I've been chosen by the Rotary Club of Barbados to participate in a cultural and vocational visit to Oregon and North California. This blog is my take on the whole affair.

Spot The Conservator

Tuesday saw my first vocational visit where we met the Siskiyou County Museum's Director, Mike Hendryx (cool name). Our interview went very well - Mike providing pot loads of information on the fund raising and management of the only museum in Yreka.

The exhibits were very professional and the deposit (where the works not on exhibit are stored) was impressive. And do you know why? Mike's also a conservator. He even knows of Archie Santiago-Torres one of my favourite objects conservators from Puerto Rico who worked with us recently stabilising the Montefiore Fountain in Bridgetown.

Melissa was also impressed with the tour as she learned a thing or two about fundraising.

Then we hopped back in the big red van with Vinnie (did I say I think she's great?)and passed by Dead Wood, which used to be a bustling town and is now only a small monument in a bunch of cast off mining rocks or trailings. Spooky.

More turkey gobbling by Vinnie's husband Bob (it became a tradition) and we jetted off to perform our first presentation to the Rotary Clubs of Scott Valley - namely Etna, Yreka, Montague and Shasta. It was a small gathering, but so friendly and they responded well to not only our verbal presentations but all the info that we carted thousands of miles to share with them (Yes this is me trying to justify my heavy luggage Justin!).
